Apply for a Georgia Learner’s Permit (Class CP)

An instructional permit, also known as a learner’s permit, is for Georgia teens preparing to get their full driver’s license.

You can apply for a learner’s permit once you are 15 years old and have passed written and vision tests.

It is the beginning step in the licensing program for young drivers ages 15 to 18.

How Do I … Get My Learner's Permit?

  1. Get Qualified

To qualify for a CP, you must:

    • Be at least 15 years of age.
    • Pass vision and knowledge exams
    • Have a parent, guardian, or authorized driver training instructor sign your application.
  2. Gather What You'll Need

    Identity and Residency Documentation

Originals only, no photocopies. Must be in English.

    • Proof of identity
    • Proof of residential address
    • Social Security number
    • Proof of U.S. citizenship or lawful status in the U.S

Check Real ID requirements for more information.

    School Status Documentation

    • The responsible adult must provide documentation showing their relationship and may request to have the permit or license revoked at any time before the applicant's 18th birthday
    • Applicants who are new to Georgia must turn in any out-of-state driver's license, permit, or ID card. If unavailable, a driving history (MVR) is required.
  3. Submit Your Application

  4. Learn and Follow the Rules

It’s important to be aware of the rules you need to follow when driving with a learner’s permit.

You can only drive an approved vehicle with a person in the car who is:

    • At least 21 years old
    • Licensed to drive an approved vehicle
    • Capable of taking control over the vehicle
    • Sitting in the seat next to the driver.
  5. Next Steps

Once you turn 16 and you’ve held your learner’s permit for one year and one day, you can take the road test to get your provisional license (Class D).
