Gather What You’ll Need
To cancel a vehicle registration, you will need:
- Your license plate number or VIN number
- Your driver’s license number or Letter ID (Letter IDs may be found on any letter sent to you regarding your vehicle)
- Form MV-18J Application of Voluntary Registration Cancellation, if cancelling your registration in person

Cancel Your Vehicle Registration
You can cancel your vehicle registration online or in person.
Cancel Registration AccordionMilitary Personnel
Military personnel who are deployed may voluntarily cancel their vehicle registration if the vehicle will not be driven during deployment.
You must cancel your vehicle registration before canceling your insurance coverage.
To cancel your registration:
- Use DRIVES e-services, or
- Submit a completed Form MV-18J application for voluntary registration cancellation by mail or in person at your county tag office
Reinstating Your Registration After Deployment
To reinstate your vehicle registration, visit your county tag office and provide:
- Payment of all ad valorem taxes and any applicable registration fines
- Proof of Georgia motor vehicle liability insurance
- A completed, signed, and notarized Form MV-18G service member's affidavit for mandatory insurance relief. The "certification of service member's commanding officer" section must be completed and signed.
- Proof of emissions inspection, if required in your county
