Renew Vehicle Registration

You have to renew your vehicle’s registration each year.

You should receive a renewal notice by the beginning of your registration month (your birthday month). Even if you do not receive the notice, taxes and penalties still apply. Contact your County Tag Office for more information.

How Do I … Renew My Vehicle Registration?

  • Gather What You’ll Need

    To renew your registration, you will need the following:

    • License plate number or VIN number
    • Driver’s license number or Letter ID (you can find this in your renewal notice)
    • All registration fees, taxes, and convenience fees, paid by either debit card, credit card, or electronic check; look up your Renewal Fee Estimate before beginning
    • Proof of liability insurance on file, if applicable
    • A passing emissions inspection certificate, if applicable
  • Renew Your Registration

    You can renew your registration online, at a Georgia MV Express Self-Service Tag Kiosk (in participating counties), in person, by mail, or by phone.

      You can renew online by visiting the Georgia DRIVES website. Under Featured Services on the main landing page, simply click on the Renew Vehicle Registration button and follow the step-by-step process. Before beginning the online registration renewal process, be sure to have all required payments, documents, and fees ready.

    • Renew at a Georgia MV Express Self-Service Tag Kiosk (in participating counties)

      Residents in participating counties can renew their registration at a Georgia MV Express Self-Service Tag Kiosk. These kiosks use scanning and touchscreen technology to securely update your vehicle registration information and print all required documents on the spot. They also provide step-by-step instructions for you to follow.

      1. Find the physical address and operating hours of a Georgia MV Express Self-Service Tag Kiosk.
      2. Bring all required payments, documents, and fees to that kiosk during its operating hours.
      3. Scan the barcode on your renewal notice or type your license plate number and the last four digits of your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the touchscreen.
      4. Pay your taxes and fees via credit card or, where available, by cash.
      5. Receive your printed registration and license plate decal (sticker).

      • Bring all required payments, documents, and fees to that address during their operating hours; some offices have different mailing and physical addresses, so be sure to check that you have the right one. Also, be sure to make copies of everything for your own records.

      • Find the mailing address of your County Tag Office.
      • Mail all required payments, documents, and fees to that address; some offices have different addresses for mail and in-person service, so be sure to check that you have the right one. Also, be sure to make copies of everything for your own records.
    • Renew by phone

      You can renew by phone by calling 877-496-0249 and following the step-by-step instructions. Before calling, be sure to have all required payments, documents, and fees ready.

  • Next Steps

    • If you renewed your registration in person or at a Georgia MV Express Self-Service Tag Kiosk, you will receive your registration and license plate decal (sticker) at the time you complete the transaction.
    • If you renewed your registration online, by mail, or by phone, you should receive your  registration and license plate decal (sticker) by mail within two to three weeks. If you do not receive your registration within 30 days, you should follow up with your County Tag Office.
